- Classic Microsoft Paint should already be on your Windows PC. In the search box next to Start on the taskbar, type paint and then select Paint from the list of results. A rumor that reached the web back in March claimed that Microsoft was working on a completely new version of its popular Fresh Paint app specifically designed for Windows Blue users and supposed to bring quite a lot of innovations in the Windows Store.
No other details have been provided since then, but today Microsoft officially introduced the new app, making it available for download from the Windows 8.1 Store.
The new Fresh Paint version comes with a watercolor medium available together with the previous oil color paint.
“For the new watercolor medium we tested hundreds of combinations of brush, paper and pigment levels with real watercolors on different papers, and mixed with different mediums,” the company explained.
“We then spent hours adjusting our algorithms to create a realistic digital painting experience. Our technology actually models how much water and pigment is deposited, and how watercolor will bleed into the paper. This bleed effect is fun to watch and true to life.”
In addition, Fresh Paint provides Windows 8.1 users with color pencils, small detail brushes, photo filters, a simplified interface, and enhanced OS integration.
From now on, users are allowed to pin paintings to the Start screen, launch the app in Snap View mode and customize the lock screen with the drawings they made.
Last but not least, Fresh Paint is now available on Windows Phone 8 too, so creating beautiful paintings on the go is possible too.
“The Windows Phone version of Fresh Paint has the same full oil paint experience as the desktop, including a blender, eraser, undo and redo and palette. It also includes real-time filter and lens integration so you can turn your photos into works of art,” Microsoft detailed.
More updates for Fresh Paint are expected to be released in the coming weeks, as Microsoft is getting ready to roll out Windows 8.1 RTM in August.
